At sea

Fire Hoses ready to repel pirates (don't know how they will hold up against grenade launchers)

17 June

Well, we were stopped again last night – twice, and today we only have one propeller working. Still 'technical problems'. The sea is still quite rough with the pools closed. We are passing a tanker at the moment, and it has water splashing well up over its bow when it goes through waves. No trouble getting a table at breakfast or lunch in 'the paddock' today. We are down to travelling at 10 knots instead of 19 or 21 and the Captain announced that it is quite possible that we will be cancelling our call at Safaga. This upsets many people whose lifelong dream is to go to The Valley of the Kings – and we'll probably sail straight past. Speaking of the Captain, we dined with him last night – well, when I say 'with him' he sat at the next table to us with his family. We had a lovely conversation - he said "Good Evening" when he arrived and "Good Evening" when he left. Mrs Captain is very nice and very beautiful. Had a nice intereaction with Captain Jnr who is about 18 months old. Looked very cute in his formal gear. These endless days at sea are wonderful – I could do this forever. We are at the start of the transit corridor for Westbound ships through the pirate area off the coast of Somalia. Ships are grouped by speed and time through this area which is patrolled by navy ships from a number of countries. Will post a photo – the white dots indicate the transit area – we sailed past the first coordinate about 8.00am today. Saw several ships travelling in the same direction, some passed us, others we passed. There are wild rumours flying all over the ship – 1) there was a big explosion in the middle of the night, 2) There was a frigate following alongside us for several hours 3) If we do make it as far as Safaga, we will be in port three days for repairs..Watch this space.....
